{"id":939,"date":"2015-09-05T13:27:23","date_gmt":"2015-09-05T12:27:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/?p=939"},"modified":"2022-04-06T10:58:57","modified_gmt":"2022-04-06T09:58:57","slug":"removing-mains-hum-from-kenwood-ts-2000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/removing-mains-hum-from-kenwood-ts-2000\/","title":{"rendered":"Removing Mains Hum From Kenwood TS-2000"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since getting headphones, the mains hum on my Kenwood TS-2000 needed to get sorted as it was really distracting.<\/p>\n<p>To confirm the source I powered the rig on a battery and the hum was still their, unplugging the antennas made no difference&nbsp;until I unplugged the RS232 serial lead to the PC, at that point the hum stopped, I then&nbsp;powered the rig from the Power Supply Unit and the hum only reappears when the serial lead is plugged in.<\/p>\n<p>The issue stems from the fact that the PC running Ham Radio Deluxe (HRD) radio program is fed from an Uninterruptable Supply&nbsp;and this has caused a Ground Loop to be created.<\/p>\n<p>I bought off eBay an RS232 opto isolator thinking this would cure it, unfortunately this stopped HRD communicating with the radio so I was stuck! posting the&nbsp;problem on the <a href=\"https:\/\/groups.yahoo.com\/neo\/groups\/KenwoodTS-2000\/info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yahoo Group<\/a> forum came up with the answer.<\/p>\n<p>The simple answer from Dave (G4UGM) was not to connect the Serial &nbsp;pin 5 Ground wire making sure the outer shells of the D9 Socket &amp; Plug were connected, and this did the trick.<\/p>\n<p>(<strong>Scroll down for update)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Serial connections on the Kenwood TS2000 are:<\/p>\n<p>1- Not connected<\/p>\n<p>2- RXD<\/p>\n<p>3- TXD<\/p>\n<p>4- Not connected<\/p>\n<p>5- GND (did not use)<\/p>\n<p>6- Not connected<\/p>\n<p>7- RTS<\/p>\n<p>8- CTS<\/p>\n<p>9- Not connected<\/p>\n<p>The finished unit with pin 5 disconnected goes in the back of the radio, the male and female connectors were soldered back to back, pin for pin except the break of&nbsp;Pin 5&nbsp;&nbsp;&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SAM_5535-Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-934\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SAM_5535-Medium-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"SAM_5535 (Medium)\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SAM_5535-Medium-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/SAM_5535-Medium.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>29 September 2015 &nbsp; &nbsp; ***UPDATE***<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Not sure what changed, but the mains hum came back!!, knowing that a 3 wire opto-isolator didn&#8217;t work, I bought an 8 wire opto-isolator from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tronicore.com\/en\/rs232-optical-isolator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tronicore<\/a>, this comes complete with serial leads and a 12vDC PSU (American Power Plug).<\/p>\n<p>I powered the unit from my rig supply, so didn&#8217;t use the PSU which came with it, the only other thing I needed was a 9 pin gender changer (Female to Male) to connect to the serial port on my PC.<\/p>\n<p>The interface only works one way round so watch for that, mains hum has gone \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/rs232-optical-isolator-3-MED.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-963 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/rs232-optical-isolator-3-MED.jpg\" alt=\"rs232-optical-isolator-3-MED\" width=\"192\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/rs232-optical-isolator-3-MED.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/rs232-optical-isolator-3-MED-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/rs232-optical-isolator-2-MED.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-962 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/rs232-optical-isolator-2-MED.jpg\" alt=\"rs232-optical-isolator-2-MED\" width=\"198\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/rs232-optical-isolator-2-MED.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/rs232-optical-isolator-2-MED-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since getting headphones, the mains hum on my Kenwood TS-2000 needed to get sorted as it was really distracting.
