5v regulator circuit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The assembly instructions are incredibly comprehensive, the build is designed in such a way that &#8216;stop and test&#8217; points are used, enabling verification before moving on to the next build stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fig 1 for example shows the components mounted to test the 5v regulation stage once 12v is applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only element of the build I struggled with was ensuring that the Nixie tube sits above the PCB by 5mm as per the instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"100\" height=\"116\" data-id=\"8645\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/pcb.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8645\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"180\" height=\"251\" data-id=\"8646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/5mm.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8646\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> The problem is once all the Nixie tube wires are threaded through the PCB, I needed a way of not only getting the correct gap, but to ensure the tube is level in all planes, to solve this I used the 12 way SIL Socket Strips which come in the kit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NOTE &#8211; This does mean going slightly &#8216;off-book&#8217; to complete as otherwise you will have already soldered them to the main PCB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" data-id=\"8647\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1883-Medium.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8647\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1883-Medium.jpeg 576w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1883-Medium-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" data-id=\"8648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1884-Medium.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1884-Medium.jpeg 576w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1884-Medium-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I discovered is you slide SIL sockets from both sides through the Nixie tube wires between the PCB until the black plastic is touching the glass and PCB and then using light pressure on the PCB allows soldering knowing that the tube will be spot on.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1894-Medium.jpeg\" alt=\"completed clock\" class=\"wp-image-8649\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1894-Medium.jpeg 576w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1894-Medium-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Completed clock looking brilliant and I&#8217;m very please with how it looks and all the features it has, for example the LEDs under the tubes can have there colour set to change every hour if you wanted too, as it is, I&#8217;ve set mine to orange (Red-3, Green -1 &amp; Blue-0).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only build variation from original, was to reduce the brilliance of the green power led, I replaced resistor R7 from 270\u2126 to 3.3k\u2126.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"576\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1895-Medium.jpeg\" alt=\"gps\" class=\"wp-image-8650\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1895-Medium.jpeg 576w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IMG_1895-Medium-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The additional GPS module only had 4 components to solder, the main GPS processor was already mounted on the PCB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The GPS module connects to the Nixie clock and its a bit unnerving waiting for the green &#8216;sync&#8217;
