{"id":3197,"date":"2018-05-26T21:17:07","date_gmt":"2018-05-26T20:17:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/?p=3197"},"modified":"2022-02-28T10:17:19","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T10:17:19","slug":"mfj-1786-magnetic-loop-modification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/mfj-1786-magnetic-loop-modification\/","title":{"rendered":"MFJ 1786 Magnetic Loop Modification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3196 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/mfj.jpg\" alt=\"mfj\" width=\"229\" height=\"220\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I bought at used MFJ 1786X (240v version) from Tony G3RGQ (sadly now SK), I have been after a magnetic loop for quite a while, so when the opportunity presented itself to buy one at a reasonable price, I went for it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/MFJ-1786-Schematic-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MFJ-1786 Schematic <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/MFJ-1786_2A-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MFJ-1786_2A <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The 1786 covers from 30m through to 10m, looking on Youtube was a modification to increase coverage into the 40m band.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mfj 1786 loop antenna 40m-10m modification\" width=\"474\" height=\"267\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Mdjt2qH3Gag?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>After looking at the video it was off to eBay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>K15U-1 47pF 10kV 8kvar Capacitors including delivery from Ukraine \u00a313.57.<\/li>\n<li>Vacuum Relay 10kV 3A including delivery from Poland \u00a323.53.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Opening the case and looking at the butterfly capacitor, I located a way to securely mount the capacitors and relay.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2764.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3187 size-large zoooom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2764-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"butterfly\" width=\"474\" height=\"632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2764.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2764-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had some left over copper sheet, so I cut a 25mm wide strip 100mm long and used this as the capacitor linking strap and mounting brackets, making sure I had a solid connection to one side off the butterfly capacitor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2766.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3189 size-large zoooom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2766-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"caps\" width=\"474\" height=\"632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2766.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2766-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The relay was mounted to the opposite side of the butterfly capacitor using a similar strap to that on the capacitors. To avoid straining the glass relay switch connection, I used some RG213 braid to link the capacitors connection to the relay, I deliberately didn&#8217;t secure the base of the relay to the fibreglass insulating sheet, this is to make the relay &#8216;floating&#8217; in an attempt to reduce the chances of relay breakage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2769.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3191 size-large zoooom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2769-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"relay\" width=\"474\" height=\"632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2769.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_2769-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I installed a &#8216;flywheel&#8217; diode across the relay coil (coil voltage\u00a0 27VDC) to protect the operating switch in the shack.<\/p>\n<p>Once the loop case was refitted, the modification was tested and works fine, many thanks to the Youtube author for sharing his practical experience.<\/p>\n<h6>Update 1 June 18<\/h6>\n<p>I bought a offset pole and 9 x 9 bracket to mount the magloop on, the existing 6 x 6 bracket was too undersized and slightly in the wrong position, the new bracket was fixed with M10 sheild anchor rawlbolts.<\/p>\n<p>The tricky bit was getting it mounted due to it being top heavy compounded by a cranked pole, the solution was to use a pully arrangment from the mast to take the weight to help get me up the ladder and also position the pole to put the &#8216;U&#8217; bolts in \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_2776-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3207 size-large zoooom\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_2776-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"loop up\" width=\"474\" height=\"632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_2776-1.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_2776-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I bought at used MFJ 1786X (240v version) from Tony G3RGQ (sadly now SK), I have been after a magnetic loop for quite a while, so when the opportunity presented itself to buy one at a reasonable price, I went for it.
