{"id":1595,"date":"2017-06-20T20:04:02","date_gmt":"2017-06-20T19:04:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/?p=1595"},"modified":"2022-04-07T08:31:14","modified_gmt":"2022-04-07T07:31:14","slug":"cat5-network-port-quick-finder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/cat5-network-port-quick-finder\/","title":{"rendered":"Cat5e Network Port Quick Finder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was perusing the internet and came across a niffty idea to quickly identify which Cat5 outlet was connected to which port on a patch panel, so, as I had the parts, I thought I&#8217;d have a go.<\/p>\n<p>The principle is very easy, in the patch panel, &nbsp;RG45 plugs are inserted into each port, within the RG45 plug is an LED connected to pins 3 &amp;6.<\/p>\n<p>At the remote faceplate, a RG45 is plugged in which has power to pins 3 &amp; 6 via a battery battery, the LED in the patch panel will now light, quickly identifing what is connected to what.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1593\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1593\" style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" zoooom wp-image-1593\" src=\"\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0431-Medium-e1497984720391.jpg\" alt=\"led plate\" width=\"343\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0431-Medium-e1497984720391.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0431-Medium-e1497984720391-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Test faceplate with pins 3 &amp; 6 bridged across each outlet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The parts were from ebay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>LEDS &#8211; 100 for \u00a32.32<\/li>\n<li>RG45 connectors &#8211; 100 for \u00a32.95<\/li>\n<li>Battery Holder &#8211; \u00a30.99<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To make the LED plug, I first marked the Cathode of the LED so I got the polarity correct when inserted into the plug.<\/p>\n<p>The next step was to flatten the LED capsule so that it fits within the cable entry of the connector.<\/p>\n<p>The LED is now pushed into the connector and crimped, hot glue is then used to seal the LED in place.<\/p>\n<p>The battery pack is powered by 2 x AA batteries, with a current limiting resistor terminated in the plug.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" zoooom alignleft wp-image-1592\" src=\"\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0430-Medium-e1497985157130.jpg\" alt=\"LEDS\" width=\"363\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0430-Medium-e1497985157130.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0430-Medium-e1497985157130-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I made 24 of the LED plugs as that was the number of ports on my patch panel.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1594\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1594\" style=\"width: 377px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" zoooom wp-image-1594\" src=\"\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0432-Medium-e1497985257366.jpg\" alt=\"kit\" width=\"377\" height=\"503\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0432-Medium-e1497985257366.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/IMG_0432-Medium-e1497985257366-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 377px) 100vw, 377px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1594\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Finished LED connectors and battery pack<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was perusing the internet and came across a niffty idea to quickly identify which Cat5 outlet was connected to which port on a patch panel, so, as I had the parts, I thought I&#8217;d have a go.
