Part 5:  Control Modification"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Updated 29 September 2023<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since my last&nbsp;<a href=\"\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/mast-automation-part-4-finished\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog on Mast Automation<\/a>&nbsp;when I thought I&#8217;d finished the project, I have made some changes to my weather station which means I no longer have an output to the mast controller, this output used to trigger the mast to lower when the wind speed hits 30 mph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I decided to update the discontinued version of my Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rievtech.com\/PR-18DC-DA-R-pd01130.html\">Rievtech PR-18DC-DA-R<\/a>&nbsp;from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.audon.co.uk\/plc.html\">Audon Ltd<\/a>, this unit is a direct replacement for my old PLC and has 12 Inputs and 6 relay Outputs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/PR-18DC-DA-R-3-458x458.jpg\" alt=\"Rievtech PLC\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The PLC accepts a number of input types, in my application I&#8217;m simply switching a voltage state with the exception of one of the inputs which is configured as an Analogue input, to which I have connected my mast mounted Anemometer (https:\/\/www.mouser.co.uk\/ProductDetail\/485-1733?R=1733virtualkey54950000virtualkey485-1733) as a means to trigger mast lowering during unsafe wind conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1473\" src=\"\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/1733.jpg\" alt=\"1733\" width=\"614\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/1733.jpg 614w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/1733-300x236.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Adafruit 1733<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">TECHNICAL DETAILS<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div id=\"technical-details\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse in-md in-lg \">\n<p><a id=\"technical-details-anchor\" class=\"invizzy-anchor\" name=\"technical-details\"><\/a>Dimensions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Height (base to center): 105mm \/ 4.1&#8243;<\/li>\n<li>Center out to Cup: 102mm \/ 4&#8243;<\/li>\n<li>Arm Length: 70mm \/ 2.8&#8243;<\/li>\n<li>Weight: 111.8g<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Wire Dimensions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wire Length: 99cm \/ 39&#8243;<\/li>\n<li>Plug Length: 30mm \/ 1.2&#8243;<\/li>\n<li>Diameter (thickness): 4.8mm \/ 0.2&#8243;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Specifications<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Output: 0.4V to 2V<\/li>\n<li>Testing Range: 0.5m\/s to 50m\/s (111.8 mph)<\/li>\n<li>Start wind speed: 0.2 m\/s<\/li>\n<li>Resolution: 0.1m\/s<\/li>\n<li>Accuracy: Worst case 1 meter\/s<\/li>\n<li>Max Wind Speed: 70m\/s (156.5 mph)<\/li>\n<li>Connector details: Pin 1 &#8211; Power (brown wire), Pin 2 &#8211; Ground (black wire), Pin 3 &#8211; Signal (blue wire), Pin 4 not connected<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I tested the output &nbsp;with help from my better half by driving at steady speed and monitoring the output from the anemometer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>0 mph = 0.40 &nbsp;mV<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>25 mph = 0.75 &#8211;&nbsp;79 mV<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30 mph = 80 mV<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>31 mph =&nbsp;81 &#8211;&nbsp;88 mV<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-1469 size-full\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0258-Medium-e1492617066798.jpg\" alt=\"Anemometer\" class=\"wp-image-1469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0258-Medium-e1492617066798.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0258-Medium-e1492617066798-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Anemometer mounted on 2m\/70cm H\/V relay switch box<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I mounted the anemometer to the top of my mast to get a representative wind speed, the next job was to strip out the old PLC from the control cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-1470 zoooom\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0259-Medium-e1492444866781.jpg\" alt=\"Mods\" class=\"wp-image-1470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0259-Medium-e1492444866781.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0259-Medium-e1492444866781-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Starting mods, (hand held winch controller on top of cabinet)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I needed to make several changes from the original design in order to free up one of the PLC&#8217;s inputs, also out of the 16 Inputs only the first 6 allow analogue inputs, so some moving of inputs was needed along with some minor works to the LED voltages and override\/luffing switch.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-1472 zoooom\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0266-Medium-e1492444792186.jpg\" alt=\"PLC\" class=\"wp-image-1472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0266-Medium-e1492444792186.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IMG_0266-Medium-e1492444792186-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Completed Cabinet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>All went back together quite nicely but an intermittent problem remained after the PLC replacement in that when the mast completed the mast raise cycle, the motor would immediately reverse and the mast would lower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hooking up the laptop to to the PLC, I selected &#8216;live monitoring&#8217;, this displayed the input and output condition, this showed that after operating the &#8216;raise&#8217; toggle switch (centre bias On &#8211; Off &#8211; On centre off), the &#8216;lower&#8217; switch input also went and remained high. (Input 1004).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Top Securing mast pin IN. (Input 1008).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mast in the lowered position. (Input 1006).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Trigger &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Switch input momentary high. (Input 1003).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Action &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lower switch inhibited.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch input via wiping relay with a 1 second ON timer to ensure momentary trigger to the next stage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>36 second up timer start to operate Up relay (fail mechanism in case the \u2018raised\u2019 sensor fails).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Up relay closes to energize motor drive. (Q002).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After expiry of Up timer or on activation of the Up sensor, Up relay opens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mast raised output relay energizes. (Input 1004).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Top Securing mast pin IN. (Input 1008).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mast in the raised position. (Input 100C).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Trigger &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Wind measured via Anemometer at 28 mph for 15 seconds. (Input A1001).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Action &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>0.4 \u2013 2v Anemometer to Analogue Threshold Trigger output set go high at 80 mV and off at 76mV, these values equate to ~28 mph and ~24 mph respectively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;\u2018On Delay\u2019 timer from analogue threshold trigger set for a sustained output of 15 seconds duration before the next stage is enabled in order to reject gusts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;\u2018Off Delay\u2019 timer set to 10 minutes, if no input from the \u2018On Delay\u2019, &nbsp;\u2018Off Delay\u2019 resets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whilst the \u2018Off Delay\u2019 timer is running, the WX Amber LED is lit. (Q005).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Output from \u2018Off Delay\u2019 to wiping relay timer set to 1 second to ensure a momentary output to the next stage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>39 second down timer starts to operate Down relay (fail mechanism in case \u2018lowered\u2019 sensor fails).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Down relay closes to energize motor drive. (Q004).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Message displayed &#8216;high wind trigger auto-lower active&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-1934\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/windwx-Medium-e1508600641930-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1934\" style=\"width:430px;height:323px\" width=\"430\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/windwx-Medium-e1508600641930-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/windwx-Medium-e1508600641930-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/windwx-Medium-e1508600641930.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Amber LED indicating high wind has triggered lowering the mast and inhibiting it from raising whilst lit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><u><\/u><u>Battery Charging Process<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><u><\/u>The winch has 3000lb capacity from Winch-It and is powered by a 12v car battery with a capacity of 45Ah \u2013 360cca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Normal Operation \u2013 &nbsp;&nbsp; 25w solar panel connected to the battery via CMP Solar Charge Controller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Automatic Operation &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trigger &#8211; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; After 4 operations of the motors (raise &amp; lower twice) or Weekly &#8211; Sunday 01.00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Action &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Multi-pole relay energizes after a 2 second delay via Q006, this:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disconnects the solar panel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applies mains to a 4A output battery charger (charger sized for Ah of battery).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connects the battery charger output to the battery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Message displayed &#8216;battery charging&#8217;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Charging ceases when:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Battery terminal voltage reaches 14.14v (Over-voltage detection module to Input 100A).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>8-hour battery run timer expires.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Manual Operation &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charging Start &#8211; Push button in control cabinet (Input 100B).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Charging Stop \u2013 Cursor key on PLC (C3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notes-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If the battery charging cycle has started and the motor (either up or down) is operated, charging will cease and resume after a delay of 2 seconds after the motor has stopped.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Up-Counter resets to zero when the charger is ON.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><u>Luffing the Mast<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conditions &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>E Stop not pressed. (Input 1004).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Top Securing mast pin Out. (Input 1008).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bottom Securing mast pin In (Input 1002).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mast in the lowered position. (Input 1006).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Luffing switch set to On (Input 1007).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Trigger &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Momentary switch (raise or lower) (Inputs 1003 or 1005).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Action &#8211;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Operating the Luffing switch supplies power to the wireless receiver and manual switch which came with the Winch-It kit via a relay , the supply for this is taken from the Luffing\/Override indicator LED, (the Luffing switch is a Double Pole Double Throw On &#8211; Off &#8211; On, the LED is fed from one side of the switch).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A further change to the control is to from latching to momentary switch operation allowing the motor to be \u2018inched\u2019 via the wireless handset or panel switches in the control cabinet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the handset allows the mast to be walked down whilst lowering or the reverse when reinstating the mast to the vertical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Message displayed &#8216;mast switched to luff&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><u>Override<\/u><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Operating the Override switch bypass all limit switches and enables momentary manual control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Message displayed &#8216; override switch on&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-decoration:underline\">Other Alert\/Warning Messages<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Top pin in, message displayed &#8216;top mast securing pin in&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bottom pin in, displayed message &#8216;bottom securing pin in&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both top and bottom pins in, message displayed &#8216;both mast securing pins in&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Update<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After breaking the winch cable and managing to replace it, (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chatteris.biz\/blog\/replacing-wire-rope-in-12m-mm0cug-mast\/\">HERE<\/a>), I&#8217;ve added motor overcurrent detection to halt any process which is taking too much power.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Updated 29 September 2023 Since my last&nbsp;blog on Mast Automation&nbsp;when I thought I&#8217;d finished the project, I have made some changes to my weather station which means I no longer have an output to the mast controller, this output used to trigger the mast to lower when the wind speed hits 30 mph.
